Overview

A 1 hour 45 minute tip-based walk through the Jewish District with a licensed guide, from the Great Synagogue and Rumbach and Kazinczy synagogues to Gozsdu Udvar, street art and the Szimpla ruin bar.

This walking tour pairs the history of Budapest's Jewish District with its lively present, including its nightlife and urban art scene. Your licensed local guide shares personal stories, hidden symbols and lesser-known histories you won't hear on a typical tour. From Erzsébet tér you walk to Deák Ferenc tér to hear about Gaudiopolis and the protective passes that saved thousands of Jewish lives, and see the remains of the medieval city wall. At the Great Synagogue, the largest in Europe, you learn about the Neolog and Orthodox movements and Zionism, and see the Memorial Courtyard and cemetery from outside. The route continues past the restored Rumbach Street Synagogue and its murals, through Gozsdu Udvar to the last surviving piece of the ghetto wall, and to the Orthodox Kazinczy Street Synagogue. It ends at Szimpla Kert, the famous ruin bar. Synagogues are seen from outside only. The tour is tip-based.
